Defining Moment - Part One

In this post I explore what I call a “Defining Moment”.

What is a Defining Moment?

As I began the process of articulating my skills and experience, I realised that there were several key moments in my life which have shaped my outlook and approach. I’m not talking about big ticket events like graduating, or landing a certain job. It’s actually been small moments which have caused me to stop, reflect and change path in some way. This is what I now call a “Defining Moment”.

Defining Moment - Part One

During my second year at university, I was disappointed at the exam grades I was receiving, especially since these were counting towards my final result. Amongst my peer group, I was definitely on the same level of understanding, yet my grades just didn’t reflect this.

It was not a case of ‘just work harder‘. No, I realised that I needed to change something, but what?

I spoke with my tutor who put me in touch with a department which helps students with their exam techniques. After discussing my concerns with them, I enrolled in a workshop.

It really opened my eyes to understanding and interpreting what the examiners were actually looking for when setting the exam questions. It also helped me to learn how to demonstrate clearly my understanding of the subject matter in an examination setting. What I learned in that workshop proved to be hugely valuable.

I achieved great grades in the final year and it also gave me the basis to ace my accounting exams after graduating.

Why was this a defining moment for me?

It was the first time in my life where I had to change my approach. I realised that I didn’t have the tools at my disposal to resolve this by myself and had to reach out for help.

How have I benefited from this moment?

I’m not afraid to ask for help if I’m struggling to deliver the results I want to achieve. That’s why I place a high value on developing and maintaining a strong professional network.

Taking the same approach will tend to generate the same results, so be flexible and willing to change if you want to excel in a new setting

Have you had a similar experience? How did you change your approach? How did it benefit you?
